Abstract

This paper aims to present Susanne Langer’s thesis on the meaningful and epistemological value of non-discursive symbols found in works of art, with a particular focus on poetry. The first section offers a reconstruction of the notion of “symbol” that underlies Langer’s interpretation of the artwork. Next, in light of the concept of the non-discursive symbol, poetry is analyzed as an art form and its apparent relationship with discourse is examined. Finally, by way of conclusion, the paper considers the meaningful value of poetry as a non-discursive symbol and the consequent expansion of the meaningful and conceptual domain within human expression.
