Literature decisively contributes to configuring a palimpsest of veiled stories, affections and ways of life that allow us to better understand our History and to be able to exercise a political function of resistance and resilience. Based on a rigorous textual analysis of Sebastian Barry’s novel The Secret Scripture (2008), as well as some narratological strategies, the use of analepsis and a noticeable fragmented narrative, this methodological approach will be complemented with the use of other theoretical frameworks such as feminist studies, affect studies and vulnerability studies. The main aim of this essay will focus on revealing the intertextual codes inscribed in the personal conscience by Irish culture and society, which led to the confinement and punishment of all those women who did not adjust to their role as wives and mothers within marriage, depriving them of their lives and their children. Although such an experience is a traumatic event in itself, this dissertation will mainly focus on how Barry’s work entails a political commitment that implies a redefinition of the traditional concept of vulnerability.
2023-12-22T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Zoe Bonacho https://papiro.unizar.es/ojs/index.php/filanderas/article/view/9999 Crossing the Mirror: an Approach to the Social Perception of the Prehistoric Past from a Gender Perspective 2023-12-20T14:54:35+00:00 Andrea Mouriño elena.masarah@gmail.com Beatriz Comendador elena.masarah@gmail.com
The media is a system of immediate and effective communication, which forms a mass culture made up of symbols, myths and stereotypes of individuals as a form of «industrialised production of reality». Within the conceptual framework of Public Archaeology, from a critical and feminist perspective, an essay is presented to approach the social perception of the prehistoric past in contemporary Popular Culture. The purpose of this work is to analyse and conceptualise the messages and ideas generated by the mass culture around the representation of prehistoric humanity to understand how they are constructed and what kind of society they promote. To this end, the image of the cavewoman is approached from its configuration in the popular imaginary to analyse the stereotypes and sexisms installed, their origin, their repercussions on the social perception of prehistory and what role this idea plays in contemporary society, and more particularly, what implications they have for women. We must go through this distorted mirror and image of the past, created by the consumer society projecting its own, where the image of women is not only that of the past but also that of the future.
2023-12-22T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Elena Masarah Revuelta; Andrea Mouriño, Beatriz Comendador https://papiro.unizar.es/ojs/index.php/filanderas/article/view/10000 Care from a gender and law perspective in Cuba 2023-12-20T15:25:08+00:00 Lissett D. Páez elena.masarah@gmail.com María Isabel López Pretel elena.masarah@gmail.com
The feminization of care is a social phenomenon that deserves to be focus with a comprehensive approach. The objective of this paper is to analyze care work in Cuba, so that it is understood as a universal right, from the paradigm of co-responsibility and empowerment. For such purposes, theoretical methods such as exegetical-analytical and comparative legal are used, which allow reaching significant results regarding care work in Cuba. The need for its inclusion in public policies and its analysis from a gender and rights perspective is highlighted.
2023-12-22T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Elena Masarah Revuelta https://papiro.unizar.es/ojs/index.php/filanderas/article/view/10001 Sexual and reproductive rights in women with intellectual disabilities: a gender-focused analysis through a systematic review 2023-12-20T16:30:03+00:00 Patricia Pérez-Curiel elena.masarah@gmail.com
The present paper addresses the sexual and reproductive health of women with intellectual disabilities from a gender and human rights perspective. Historically, these individuals have faced stigmatization and misconceptions regarding their sexuality and decision-making capacity. However, in the era of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, there is an emphasis on the need to leave no one behind, which must include, of course, people with disabilities. The evolution in the conceptualization of sexual and reproductive rights has led to a growing interest in their study, highlighting the importance of empowerment and self-determination. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) recognizes these rights. Therefore, it is essential to avoid continuing to view women with intellectual disabilities, as has traditionally been done, with contradictory representations that perceive and define them as asexual, eternal children, or highly vulnerable individuals. The article is based on a comprehensive review of the scientific literature, focusing on three main themes: interpersonal relationships, sexual and reproductive health, and pregnancy. A human rights-based approach, gender equality, and inclusion will ensure that women with intellectual disabilities have access to full sexual and reproductive health.
2023-12-22T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Elena Masarah Revuelta; Patricia Pérez-Curiel https://papiro.unizar.es/ojs/index.php/filanderas/article/view/10002 Confronting Sexist Comments: Verbal (Im)Politeness in Spanish and German 2023-12-20T16:51:07+00:00 Guiomar Topf Monge elena.masarah@gmail.com
This paper adopts a pragmatic perspective to examine the verbal responses to micro-sexist comments. The objective is to define and analyse the speech act «confronting sexist comments», focusing on the facework used among peers. The study was carried out with a Discourse Completion Task at the campus of the University Pablo de Olavide in Seville, involving Spanish students as well as German Erasmus students. The aim was to investigate how strategies of verbal (im)politeness, as defined by Culpeper, Bousfield, and Wichmann (2003) and Bousfield (2008), vary based on the Spanish or German linguaculture and the gender of the speakers. Intercultural studies (Siebold & Busch, 2015) predict that Spanish speakers would utilise positive facework more frequently than German speakers, while feminist studies (Mills, 2005) suggest that women are expected to display more polite linguistic behaviour than men. The results indicate that negative assessments of sexist comments were more prevalent in Spanish culture and among female speakers, whereas German and male speakers more frequently avoided reacting to sexist comments. Furthermore, the findings suggest that «confronting sexist comments» may be a speech act where the gender bias is more significant than intercultural differences between Spanish and German students.
2023-12-22T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Elena Masarah Revuelta; Guiomar Topf Monge https://papiro.unizar.es/ojs/index.php/filanderas/article/view/10003 Prostitution under Franco's dictatorship: an approach to the Provincial Board of Barcelona between 1943 and 1956 2023-12-20T17:12:33+00:00 Elisabet Velo i Fabregat elena.masarah@gmail.com
Prostitution is, and has been, an activity persecuted in the name of public morality. Since the beginning of the 20th century, different institutions have been created and modified with different objectives regarding the safeguarding of feminine morality. In addition, “white slavery” was also prosecuted, that is, the trafficking of women and minors for the exercise of prostitution, which years later would be called “trafficking in persons.” In this work, the trajectory of these institutions will be reviewed, placing special emphasis on the Franco dictatorship, and approaching the Provincial Board of Barcelona for the Protection of Women from its creation in 1943 and until 1956, the year in which the law for the abolition of prostitution is approved. The recent publication of its archive collection allows us to verify different issues of interest, such as the topics of its information files, as well as its memories and the statistics that are found and that bear witness to intense activity until the entry of democracy and, with she, the extinction of the Board of Trustees.
2023-12-22T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2023 Elena Masarah Revuelta; Elisabet Velo i Fabregat https://papiro.unizar.es/ojs/index.php/filanderas/article/view/10006 Marías.
