Abstract

This article examines the concept of the “synthetic past” as a form of reconstructing the past mediated by digital technologies, social media, and cultural products. It proposes a definition that distinguishes it from the historical and mediated past, and analyzes its use as spectacle, ideological tool, and space of resistance. Finally, it reflects on the ethical and epistemological challenges it poses for history, memory, and critical citizenship.

Author Biography

  • Alberto Venegas Ramos

    Alberto Venegas Ramos is a historian and researcher specialized in the relationship between digital media, video games, and the representation of the past. He holds a PhD from the University of Murcia and is the author of five books, including Synthetic Past: The Challenge of Artificial Intelligence to History and Memory (Madrid: Marcial Pons, 2026). He teaches secondary and high school at the IES Bárbara de Braganza, belongs to the “Digital Humanities: History and Video Games” research group at the University of Murcia, and participates in the teaching innovation project “Generative Artificial Intelligence as a Didactic Resource to Promote Critical Thinking in Medieval History Students” at the University of La Laguna. His research focuses on digital historiography, memory studies, and the public uses of the past in technological environments.
