El poema inglés medio Peal puede leerse como un ejemplo del género literario conocido como consolatio, y perteneciente por tanto a la tradición clásica de poemas que consisten en un diálogo moralizante destinado a consolar e instruir al narrador, tradición que sigue el modelo de la Consolatio Philosophiae de Boecio. En ambas obras, la instrucción derivada de la enseñanza moral es el único remedio y consuelo para el narrador y, en consecuencia, para los lectores.
