The Middle English poem Peal can be read as an instance of the literary genre known as the consolatio, and belonging therefore to the classical tradition of poems which consist in a moralizing dialogue intended to console and instruct the narrator, a tradition which follows the model of Boethius' Consolatio Philosophiae. In both works the instruction derived from moral teaching is the sole remedy and consolation for the narrator, and, consequently, for the readers.
