La mayor parte de las fuentes historiográficas nos presentan el principado de Severo Alejandro como una monarquía moderada. Entre ellas destacan las de Casio Dión, Herodiano y, aunque con evidentes cautelas, la Vita Alexandri Severi. El análisis de un reducido número de constituciones imperiales, en cuya elaboración han participado senadores y juristas de especial renombre, ha permitido corroborar esta idea.
