Abstract

This issue of the journal brings together research addressing diverse themes and disciplines in landscape construction through the lens of memory. The scales covered are equally varied, ranging from the territorial and urban to the specific of the architectural project. The broad participation of researchers has allowed for the compilation of an index with examples from different countries and regions, creating a highly engaging international perspective. The two thematic axes—landscape construction and the contribution of the architectural project to it—guide the corresponding conversations with two leading academic and professional authorities in the field: Joan Nogué and José Ignacio Linazasoro. Nogué delves into the landscape as the face of the territory and the necessary balance between individual perception and collective action, between subject and object. Linazasoro addresses the theme of memory as a material for the architectural project, associating it with terms such as continuity, maintenance, and permanence.

  • Carlos Labarta Aizpún, University of Zaragoza

    Professor of Architectural Projects, University of Zaragoza. Fulbright Scholar, Master in Design Studies, GSD, Harvard University, 1990. Extraordinary Doctoral Prize, University of Navarra, 2000. Eisenhower Fellowship, 2006. Articles published in Revista de Arquitectura RA, PPA, VLC, RITA, Constelaciones, or ACE Architecture, City and Environment, and in volumes such as Architects' Journeys and After the Manifesto (GSAPP Books, Columbia University/T6 Ediciones, 2011, 2014. Author or editor of eight books, including Arquitectua racionalista en Huesca, 2008 and Proyecto arquitectónico y materia, lecciones integradas, 2014. Works awarded in the García Mercadal Prize from 1992 to the present and the Ricardo Magdalena Architecture Prize, IFC, Zaragoza, 2011, 2023. Madrid City Council Urban Planning Prize, 1991. His work has been a Pre-finalist and Selected in the XII and XIV editions of the Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism, 2014 and 2018.

  • Ascensión Hernández Martínez, University of Zaragoza

    Full Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Zaragoza. She has been a guest lecturer in national and international master’s programs, including those at the University of Granada, the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Sapienza University of Rome, and the Universities of Ferrara, Catania, and Chieti-Pescara (Italy). Additionally, she teaches in the doctoral programs of several universities, including the Polytechnic University of Turin and UNAM (Mexico). She specializes in contemporary architecture, the theory and history of monumental restoration, and cultural heritage studies. Her publications include Las ciudades históricas y la destrucción del legado urbanístico español (2019), Sos del Rey Católico. Un ejemplo de recuperación de la arquitectura románica aragonesa (2018), and Conservando el pasado, proyectando el futuro. Tendencias en la restauración monumental en el siglo XXI (2016). She has participated in both national and international research projects, such as GAP: Graffiti Art in Prison (ERASMUS+ program, coordinated by the University of Palermo). Currently, she serves as co-Principal Investigator (co-PI) alongside Professor Carlos Labarta for the project Cultural Landscapes in Aragon: A Comparative Study to Generate New Models of Analysis and Social Transfer, funded by the 2022 Call for "Knowledge Generation Projects" of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Government of Spain (reference PID2022-139102NB-I00).

  • Alegría Colón Mur, University of Zaragoza

    Architect and holder of a Master's degree in Architectural Conservation from the University of Valladolid, she earned her PhD from the University of Zaragoza. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Zaragoza, where she teaches in the area of Architectural Design. Her built work has received national and international recognition and has been featured in specialized publications. Among its distinctions is being shortlisted for the XV Spanish Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism and for the 2026 CSCAE Architecture Awards. She is the author of journal articles and book chapters published in collective volumes such as Estados intermedios. Intermediate Stages and 10 años, 10 textos, as well as in the journal ZARCH. Since 2022, she has been a member of the Institute of Heritage and Humanities and of the research groups Cultural Landscapes in Aragon and Urban Landscapes and Contemporary Design, both affiliated with the University of Zaragoza.
