Abstract

Parallel to the evolution of models in the generative paradigm, the phenomena of word-formation have been studied from a variety of perspectives within this theory. This paper reviews some of the most interesting contributions on this topic presented since the mid 1970s up to the beginnings of the 90s. The aim is to show tliat, despite the advances in understanding the complexities of lexical creation , there is quite a lot to do. Thus, there is missing a really comprehensive model of word formation in which all the conditions that restJict the creation of a derived item are treated in equal detail.
