«Metafictional Games in Chatterton» es un estudio de Chatterton de Ackroyd como novela autorreflexiva. Este artículo pretende analizar los métodos narrativos autoconscientes de Chatterton, centrándose en la elección de Ackroyd del tema y en su reescritura de la historia. A partir de un enfoque narratológico, veremos cómo la novela cuestiona sus propios métodos de representación, así como la cuestión de la representación en las obras de arte, principalmente en la literatura y la pintura. Tras el estudio de la figura del poeta Chatterton, examinamos la pertinencia de sus ideas sobre el plagio en la sociedad literaria actual descrita en la novela; el plagio es una condición general en esta sociedad postestructuralista. La última parte del artículo está dedicada al estudio de Chatterton como novela historiográfica y de ficción, y se basa en el análisis que hace Hutcheon de esta forma narrativa.
