Lo que producen los narradores de Nabokov no es un registro fiel del pasado, sino una invención imaginativa, mediada por su punto de vista, su conciencia metaficcional y su manipulación activa de la historia. Existe, pues, una dificultad para retratar la realidad, porque cualquier punto de vista sobre la realidad es un punto de vista subjetivo, en el que se mezclan la memoria y la imaginación. Nabokov reconoce que no puede mostrar la realidad de forma simple. Un análisis de la narración en Lolita muestra una relación más problemática entre ficción y realidad que la que la ficción realista permite reconocer al lector.
