Modals and Modality in English

La modalidad como noción lingüística tiene una clara expresión en inglés a través del uso de diferentes verbos modales. A este respecto, podemos abordar este hecho tanto desde una perspectiva diacrónica como sincrónica. En cuanto al desarrollo de los modales en el tiempo, es interesante considerar el relato de Bernd Heine, para quien el desarrollo de los modales debe considerarse dentro de un proceso de gramaticalización y desemantización de los verbos plenos, plenamente explicable en términos cognitivos. Desde un punto de vista sincrónico, la modalidad expresada por los modales ingleses debería considerarse en conexión con el tiempo y el aspecto. Una forma conveniente de visualizar la interacción que tiene lugar es el uso de los conos espacio-temporales de Minkowsky, que se presentan aquí con ejemplos que ilustran la utilidad de este modelo para la descripción de estas nociones gramaticales de forma integrada.
