'Standard English' as a Metaphor of Language in the English Language Education Debate

Este artículo investiga un área específica del lenguaje sobre el lenguaje en el debate sobre la enseñanza de la lengua inglesa. Reddy (1979) ha argumentado que el metalenguaje inglés está dominado y estructurado por un marco metafórico principal, la metáfora conductiva. En oposición a este marco se encuentra la metáfora negociadora, un marco alternativo de metáfora generativa (Schön, en Ortony, ed., 1979). Dentro de estos marcos, los términos clave del debate se consideran etiquetas metafóricas a través de las cuales se expresan perspectivas parciales.
El contexto elegido para el debate sobre la enseñanza de la lengua inglesa es uno en el que el metalenguaje tiene consecuencias significativas para la perspectiva lingüística y social de las generaciones futuras.
Aunque aquí nos vamos a centrar más en la metáfora metalingüística que en el contexto, este estudio intenta complementar los trabajos existentes en este ámbito del «lenguaje en la enseñanza de idiomas» (por ejemplo, Graddol y Swann 1988, Crowley 1989). De hecho, recoge las invitaciones de Graddol y Swann a unirse al debate sobre «el problema que la variabilidad del significado del discurso plantea a quienes se ocupan profesionalmente de la lengua y la educación».
