Abstract

Forest maturity is not a new concept, but it has only recently been incorporated into forest management practices in Spain. Its significance lies primarily in its function as a biodiversity reservoir, making its conservation a key priority for improving sustainable forest management. Assessing the recent development of mature stands across different biogeographical regions can facilitate the identification of new mature forests and support more informed planning and management decisions. This study examines the evolution of five forest stands with mature characteristics located in Nature 2000 Network in Aragon.
