Abstract

The European Landscape Convention defines landscape as "an area as perceived by people, whose character is the result of the action of natural and/or human factors." In this context, the Geographical Institute of Aragón (IGEAR) has developed Regional Landscape Maps that identify, classify, and assess the landscape diversity of Aragón’s regions. These maps, developed within the framework of Law 4/2009 and its 2015 amendment, align with the principles of the European Landscape Convention by integrating landscape (both natural and human-made) as a key resource for territorial planning and sustainable development. With scales ranging from 1:25,000 to 1:100,000 and georeferenced photographic annexes, these maps have become essential tools for territorial management, providing benefits such as quality of life, historical identity, and socioeconomic resources for many municipalities in Aragón. By combining geomorphology and landscape, these maps facilitate more effective and equitable territorial planning.
