Abstract

Abstract

The Spanish Civil War was not an isolated event in the context of interwar Europe. Its effects transcended Spanish borders and influenced the politics and society of different European states. Belgium was no exception. We therefore believe that analysing how the Spanish war impacted on the day-to-day life of the Belgian state and society helps to demonstrate that the socio-political alternatives that characterise Spain were also present in other European countries. The study of the influence of the Spanish Civil War on other states demonstrates that the war itself should be analised within the European context. This article provides what we believe to be a useful tool for future research. It is a historiographical essay surveying academic works dealing with the question of the impact of the Spanish Civil War in Belgium. Here we explore the scope and limits of the research carried out to date, as well as the methodological approaches used, showing that there is still much research to be done.
