Abstract

This paper si about (i) our traditional resistance to feeling as constitutive of the philosophical task, and (ii) the power of aesthetics to enable ethics. It claims that feeling  is necessary  for meaning and value. It is argued, further, that aesthetic experience, and the aesthetic in general, have the power to wake us un from our usual existencial sleep or numbness. Becarse the grammar of aesthetic language involves  self-exposure and self-commitment, it is suggested, in rejecting the sensible, we may be disavowing the inevitable emotional engagement in al human communication and evading the dificulty of the vulnerability for the real task of philosophy.
