Abstract

This article describes and analyzes a teaching activity put into practice during the last decade in the Bachelor’s in Medicine, the so-called Tutored Works, whose methodology, objectives and results we consider to be of interest to professors and students both in the field of the Health Sciences and of the Humanities and Social Sciences. These works are carried out in small groups within the 1st year course in “Research and New Technologies” and consist of conducting a personal interview with a former student of the Faculty of Medicine and processing the collected data to obtain an oral source useful for future research and to preserve the institution’s historical memory. Among the conclusions obtained we highlight: 1) acquisition of a more complex image of the medical profession; 2) difficulty of fitting an activity of research initiation into an intensive academic calendar; 3) problems in understanding qualitative methodologies in a biomedical context.

Author Biography

Javier Martínez Antonio, Universidad de Zaragoza

Javier Martínez Antonio works currently as Lecturer in History of Science (History of Medicine) at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zaragoza. PhD at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in 2005, he has worked as a researcher for the Juan de la Cierva programme at the Center for Human and Social Sciences of the CSIC in Madrid, as a Marie Curie IEF researcher at the Laboratoire SPHERE (CNRS-Université Paris 7) and as an FCT researcher at the CIDEHUS of the University of Évora. In addition, he has carried out predoctoral and postdoctoral research stays at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, at the universities of Düsseldorf and Bergen, at the Center Jacques Berque in Rabat and at the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation in Havana. He is a specialist in health, disease, epidemics and humanitarian action in the Spanish colonies (Morocco, Cuba, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea) in the 19th and 20th centuries.
