Abstract

Pilgerodendron uviferum is a conifer widely distributed in the forest sof South America (39°-57° S.), with greater expansion in Chile. A short study is presented of a small group of this “ciprés de las Guaitecas” which represents the largest eastern distribution of this species in Chile. The sector is very close to the formation of the Patagonian steppe, not more than 10 km from it, and therefore it lives in a moderately humid habitat (about 1.980 mm of annual precipitation), compared to the high humidity in which it normally grows (up to more than 4,000 mm), on the coast of the region of Aisén (44°-49° S.). This geobotanical curiosity requires protection for the conservation of this site.
