Este artículo plantea una pregunta enigmática en su título y, a continuación, examina diversos aspectos de la actual revisión del Oxford English Dictionary (OED; Tercera Edición, 2000-) en busca de respuestas. Tras una breve exposición de la historia del diccionario desde el siglo XIX hasta nuestros días, se examinan algunas palabras nuevas que han entrado en el inglés procedentes de las lenguas de la Europa continental y, a continuación, se repasan algunas de las palabras más antiguas del inglés, que entraron en él en una época muy anterior. A través del intercambio de vocabulario (tanto de importación como de exportación del inglés) surgen aspectos de una cultura europea compartida, y se destacan los tipos de texto (incluidas las fuentes de Internet) que son importantes para trazar este cambio lingüístico.
