Resumen

El objetivo de este artículo es presentar una historia del entretenimiento útil a través de los géneros de instrucción laica. El foco se pondrá en los textos medievales tardíos y modernos tempranos, pero también se abordará una diacronía más larga. Primero se repasará el título palabra por palabra, para explicar el método de análisis y el enfoque, y mostrar cómo el entretenimiento útil y la instrucción están vinculados en la historia de la lengua inglesa. La parte empírica de este artículo se centrará primero en las formas del discurso y después en los rasgos lingüísticos de algunos textos típicos.
