A Proposal to Exploit Legal Term Repertoires Extracted Automatically from a Legal English Corpus

Resumen

El uso de corpus especializados como material de apoyo en IFE/IFA es un fenómeno muy extendido y, sin embargo, hasta donde sabemos, la cantidad de materiales basados en corpus en el área del inglés jurídico es considerablemente reducida. Este estudio presenta la propuesta de varias actividades basadas en corpus para fomentar la adquisición de terminología jurídica. Para ello, se recopiló un corpus de inglés jurídico (BLaRC) de 8,85 millones de palabras y se procesó para identificar sus términos más relevantes utilizando el software TermoStat de P.Drouin (2003). Se creó un corpus compuesto por tres libros de texto de inglés jurídico (LegTeXT) para establecer una comparación entre los inventarios de términos obtenidos a partir de ambos corpus y determinar así la utilidad de la lista de términos obtenida a partir del primer corpus para ser utilizada como material didáctico de apoyo. Se realizaron varias pruebas encontrando un solapamiento del 67% entre los dos inventarios de términos. Además, utilizando el software Range de Heatley y Nation (1996), se comprobó que el 12,37% de las palabras corrientes en los libros de texto de inglés jurídico estaban cubiertas por el inventario de términos obtenido de BLaRC. Tras revisar la bibliografía sobre el tema, también se sugiere una taxonomía para la clasificación de los términos jurídicos, seguida de la propuesta de varias actividades de vocabulario centradas en distintos niveles lingüísticos, a saber, morfológico, sintáctico, semántico y discursivo.
