Vowel-colour Symbolism in English and Arabic: A Comparative Study

El simbolismo sonoro, o la relación no arbitraria entre los componentes formales y semánticos del lenguaje, ha sido tradicionalmente un área descuidada, debido sobre todo a la fuerte influencia del estructuralismo de Saussure durante el siglo XX. Sin embargo, en la actualidad está recibiendo una gran atención y está siendo objeto de relevantes trabajos experimentales. El presente trabajo pretende contribuir al campo del simbolismo sonoro mediante dos tareas experimentales con participantes ingleses y árabes que analizan la conexión entre los sonidos vocálicos y los colores. Los datos recogidos sugieren que los participantes asocian fuertemente sonidos y colores en un grado superior al azar, y que aunque existen coincidencias entre las dos lenguas estudiadas, la asociación parece estar fuertemente influenciada por factores lingüísticos, culturales e idiosincrásicos.
