Abstract

The Knife of Never Letting Go, by Patrick Ness, takes place in a world full of Noise where everyone can hear everyone else’s thoughts. Todd, the nearly-thirteen-year-old protagonist, finds his life profoundly disrupted on the day he stumbles upon silence. Although filled with emotions, the
novel never degenerates into sentimentality and therefore appeals to teenagers of both sexes. This is
partly down to the atypical way in which these emotions are expressed by the illiterate narrator and
transposed on to the written page.
Key words: dystopia, science-fiction, teenager, emotions, noise.
