Abstract

This paper analyzes the literary representation of the intellectuals in Ready-made Insaeng by Chae Mansik (1902-1950), a key figure to understand modern Korean literature. Together with an interpretative analysis of the intellectual the essay uses a comparative approach to establish links and parallelisms between hidalgos, yangban and the new intellectuals that emerge from the later in literature. This serves the purpose of emphasizing the relevance of these literary works out of the socio-historical context in which they emerge and the universality of literary expression as a vehicle to explore the human character.
