Abstract

This work aims to study the similarities between the aesthetic doctrines of Croce and the modernists. In spite of the geographical distance between them, they were attracted by similar emotions and repelled by the same ideologies. After outlining the principles on which Croce's work is founded, we examine the parallels between the Italian thinker and the modernists, starting from their respective ideas of the subjectivity of art. Beauty, authenticity, and individuality stand out among aspects of literary creation. For Croce and the modemists, language and spiritual expression are inseparable. Language is the creation of the spirit. For them, the law of form is the expression of the impression. The significance of the impression is essential to the work of art.
