Abstract

Madame L. G. D. R. (perhaps Le Givre de Richebourg, according to the French National Library) was a feminist writer under the Ancien Regime, but she is little known today. She wrote several novels and plays (almost all of which are connected with Spain) in the 1730's. Her adaptation of Persiles y Sigismunda gives even more importance to the women characters than the original, where they already are prominent. In addition, two tales by Mme. L. G. D. R. have been interpolated, both centered on strong, intelligent women. The latter, in general, are presented as savantes, possessing will, knowledge and talent to an extraordinary degree.
