This paper identifies and analyses the main approaches to the study of the social perception of science. The discussion is structured around the dichotomy established by the abstract approach and the contextual approach. Placing this study within the interdisciplinary context of science studies, I try to understand both perspectives underlying assumptions about science and society, as well as their working frameworks, their main issues and hypothesis and the keys to current debates.
