• Leisure activities in a natural environment (not only for the purpose of doing sport) have increased tremendously over the past fifty years. The number of accidents and incidents has also risen in a
similar fashion. Within the sphere of mountain accidents, we have looked at costs, the training required for their prevention (mainly from a technical standpoint), along with psychological studies focusing on the attraction of risk and the reasons behind it. In the course of our work we have interviewed seven experts on the subject (trainers, managers and technicians from rescue teams) and six sports aficionados (athletes from a range of levels), and have compared their points of view with the existing literature, in an effort to obtain a greater understanding of the different viewpoints, so that in future the appropriate action can be taken with respect to each opinion in an attempt to prevent accidents happening in the natural environment.
