Abstract

This essay is an overview of historiographical trends on the relations between Latin America and Italy in the interwar period. The article examines themes and perspectives prevailing in historiography on propaganda and cultural diplomacy. Through it, we shall focus upon the main issues raised by some historians, to interpret political propaganda abroad, with categories such as “cultural diplomacy” and “cultural policy”; besides, this historiographic debate is connected with general studies on cultural diplomacy in the fascist Italy and in some Latin American countries. With this approach, the text identifies some crucial methodological difficulties and explains why there has been a long delay in a debate where stands out a more precise terminology and new fields of research.
