Effects of Garden-pathing in Martin Amis's novels Time's Arrow and Night Train

Resumen

Los críticos describen a menudo las novelas del escritor británico Martin Amis como artefactos bromistas que descuidan la historia y la trama en favor de una pirotecnia posmoderna muy engañosa. En este artículo intento explorar un fenómeno literario que a menudo se parafrasea como «tomar el pelo al lector», argumentando que una de las principales glorias de la prosa de Amis reside, paradójicamente, en las ambiguas estructuras narrativas y en la forma en que los lectores son «conducidos por un sendero ajardinado» en el curso de sus mundos ficticios. Basándome en una selección de críticas recientes de la Inteligencia Artificial (Minsky), la narratología cognitiva (Jahn) y la teoría general de la recepción del lector, analizaré las novelas de Amis Time's Arrow y Night Trains y propondré que las trampas narrativas empleadas son altamente funcionales. En lugar de limitarse a los lectores de Hanoi, en realidad conducen «a alguna parte», produciendo diversos efectos estéticos y, en última instancia, convirtiendo las novelas en lo que Roland Barthes ha denominado textos «escriturales».
