Abstract

The paradox is a figure of speech that has been more studied by formal Logic than by recent Rhetoric. This essay utilizes chiefly a corpus of samples of journalistic language, as well as some literary texts. It tries to analyse the paradoxes by relating expressions with metalinguistic words and the others which exhibit by themselves its own structure. The types detached in the papers by N. S. Norrick are discussed here from the argumentative and pragmatic point of view, and increased with the melalinguistic type and the one based on presupposition in Fregean sense.
