Abstract

This work deals with an image of San Juan de la Cruz's Commentary to Llama de amor viva. The image of "Mystic Sea" seems not to have received the same attention as other metaphors of mystic union, even by Helmut Hatzfeld, who misses "soul diving on god" kind of images in the Spanish Mystic.
The different aspects of Mystic Sea -including that of Literary History, Theology, Poetics, and Spirituality- allow us to conclude that a metaphor is much more than a rethorical ornament, and that it is a personal expresion of spirituality, situated on a tradition and with a cultural background that contribute decisively to every aesthetic creation.
