Abstract

In this essay l examine tbe "stone"/ "flower" dialectics in Williams' and  Paz's surrealist poems, laying special emphasis on the way in which both authors use the open-ended alternation and complementarity of the two motif's to illustrate their respective theories of the poetic sign. In the concluding pages of my essay I resort to Paz's writings on politics and translation to highlight some of the ideological contradictions inherent in his poetics.
