The article examines the first incorporation into the education system of Ukrainian refugee children accommodated in the largest shelter opened in Navarre in response to the Ukrainian emergency situation. It highlights the challenges faced by the schools and the successful strategies to overcome them, based on testimonies of 33 people from the educational community and key actors in the host context, complemented by secondary sources. The study reveals the significant challenges faced by schools, such as lack of planning, language barriers, difficulties in educational assessment, shortage of support resources or high student turnover. Successful strategies include good and proactive reception, language immersion, recruitment of Ukrainian teachers and use of translation devices, pedagogical adaptations that prioritise the emotional, among others. The implementation of reception protocols for contexts of high turnover of refugee students, early coordination and flexibility of resources to effectively address these situations and the presence of the professional figure of social workers into schools is recommended to facilitate the educational integration of refugee and immigrant children.
