Resumen

En la ciudad de Barcelona se encuentra el Museu Barbier-Mueller d’Art Precolombí, el primer museo europeo dedicado exclusivamente a las culturas americanas anteriores al contacto con los europeos. Este museo fue inaugurado hace tan solo trece años, en 1997, por lo que el presente artículo pretende situar su joven trayectoria, así como la singularidad de su génesis. Esta institución pertenece a la red de museos del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, pero sus antecedentes se encuentran en la familia suiza Barbier-Mueller, hoy día aún propietaria del conjunto de las colecciones. Finalmente, se presenta la imagen y la descripción de diez obras representativas de la variedad de culturas precolombinas presentes en los fondos, en las que se puede apreciar la calidad artística del conjunto.

In the city of Barcelona you can find the Barbier-Mueller Museum of Pre-Columbian Art, the first European museum dedicated exclusively to the American cultures prior to their contact with the Europeans. This museum was inaugurated just thirteen years ago, in 1997, and for this reason this article aims to put into context its young trajectory, as well as the singularity of its beginnings. This institution belongs to the network of museums of the City Council of Barcelona, but its origins can be found in the Swiss family of Barbier-Mueller, still today the owner of all the collections. Finally the image and descriptions of ten representative works are presented of the variety of Pre-Columbian cultures included in the collections, in which the overall artistic quality can be appreciated.
