Tras una reflexión sobre la cultura epigráfica romana del Principado, se analiza el caso de los epígrafes funerarios de P. Paquio Esceva y su mujer, Flavia, grabados en el interior de un sarcófago de Histonium, y las posibles razones que motivaron tan singular ubicación de las inscripciones.
