Abstract

Raul Waleis (anagram of Luis V. Varela) wrote first two Detective Fictions in Spanish, La Huella del Crimen (1877) and Clemencia (1877). Both texts are crossed by a notion of reality as an appearance. In this paper we show the relevance of the aforesaid assertion, from the assumption that there is a connection between the genre and what we mean by "problem of appearances". Throughout the exposition, we make three extratextual references, of contextual kind: to positivism, to Generation of ‘80 and to Buenos Aires; the rest of data comes, mainly, from textual elements of narratological type, over which we outline some possible interpretations.
