Durante los años que vive en Burdeos antes de su muerte, Goya realiza una serie de dibujos en los que predomina un mundo desquiciado. Bastantes de estos dibujos representan escenas que pudo ver en las calles de Burdeos, pero Goya ha acentuado lo estrafalario y grotesco de las mismas, así como de los personajes que las protagonizan. Estos dibujos son grotescos más que satíricos pues no critican el mundo representado sino que muestran su carácter dislocado, como si no existiera alternativa alguna a lo que en ellos se dibuja. Es propio de lo grotesco concebir un mundo cerrado y en ello se diferencia de la sátira que, con su crítica, alude a la posibilidad de algo diferente, de una salida o alternativa que aquí no existe. Lo grotesco de Goya es, entonces, cómico y dramático.

Abstract

During the years he spent in Bordeaux prior to his death, Goya created a series of drawings where a disturbed world predominates. A great deal of these drawings represent scenes he could have seen on the streets of Bordeaux, but Goya emphasized the eccentric and grotesque nature of them and their protagonists. These drawings are grotesque, rather than satirical, because instead of criticizing the world they feature, they show its disjointed character, as if no alternative could exist to what is represented there. It is typical of the grotesque to conceive a closed world, and this is what differentiates it from satire, which hints to the possibility of something different, a way out or alternative, which does not exist here. Goyaís vision of the grotesque is, thus, both comic and dramatic.
