On the Third Generation. Perspective One Century Later (1918-2018)

Abstract

The first two generations of modern architects began respectively with Frank Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto. The third generation is chronologically formed by those born between the two great wars. Therefore we celebrate now the centenary of those who began it and, with their proposals and manifestos, contributed to consolidate it. The goal is to establish a framework that includes certain events to better understand the relationships of these pioneers with the areas in which they developed their activity and the transitions produced since the Modern Movement, which were already consolidated when this generation began. The initial reference is the edition of Philip Drew about "the Third Generation", continued by a series of texts that reflect the principles and ideas that guided the development of the proposals of these architects. A critical moment of this history took place in the CIAM of 1956 that opened the way to Team 10. We focus on two important personalities in different contexts: Aldo van Eyck and Sáenz de Oíza, whose thought shows the keys that bring us closer to this time.
