Abstract

The catalog of architectural heritage is made up not only by built buildings, but by all those unbuilt architectures with remaining graphic documentation. According to UNESCO, heritage is the cultural legacy of the past that is transmitted to future generations. Architectural drawings are a particular production of our culture, included in the architectural heritage and must be approached considering different conceptual, methodological and professional perspective. In such a turbulent century as the 20th century, many radicalized expressions emerged, exclusively based on the appropriation of public space. Architects had to learn to fight against this distortion of past and future memory with the best weapon at their disposal: drawing. This article surveys some of the most controversial drawn architectures of that century, either because they embody a dissident attitude in the face of the prevailing univocal vision or because of their own symbolic or argumentative content. Their legacy includes not only documentation of the highest artistic value, but also a myriad of controversial, radical and sometimes comic ideas, without whom it would not be possible to understand current architecture.
