Abstract

The role of translation in foreign language teaching has undergone many changes throughout history. For centuries, it was an essential tool in language learning. However, with the advent of the Reform Movement and new teaching methods, translation was heavily criticised and banned from classroom practice, being considered an obstacle to direct access to the foreign language. It was not until the introduction of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in 2001 that translation was once again recognised as an integral part of foreign language learning.

This article examines the role of translation in language teaching through a historical overview of the different teaching methods and presents the results of an empirical study conducted at the Hellenic Open University, aimed at understanding the perceptions of foreign language students regarding translation.
